Increased focus on small satellites at key industry event
Today we had the pleasure of meeting with GomSpace CEO Niels Buus and CFO Troels Dalsgaard at the annual world satellite business week, which is a distinctive annual executive conference, for the gobal satelite (sat) connectivity and information industry. During the conference, the CEO confirmed that the key topics of focus had included 1) small sat low earth orbit (LEO) constellations (GomSpace’s focus area) which can be used to e.g reduce latency vs. traditional large sat, 2) the strengthen focus the European Union is placing on fostering the EU space economy and 3) the new trends, likely to further drive up demand for small sat constellations in the future e.g. connected cars.
Material growth in small sat launches expected this decade
The conference highlighted the revolution the market for small sats are seeing, with the number of launched small sats being launched between 2021-2025 expected to reach 1.300, up from 500 between 2016-2020 and an estimated 14.000 small sats to be launch with the next ten years. The growth is expected to come from larger constellations (like the potential +200 small sat Indra project, which GomSpace is involved in) and the more fragmented government projects.
