I denne gennemgang af konkurrencebilledet for musik streaming i Afrika indgår Apple, Sportify og den kinesiske Boomplay. Dansk-baserede Mdundo nævnes ikke artiklen. Medier sår tvivl om afrikaneres betalingsevne – og vilje, når det gælder musiktjenester. Ifølge Mdundos keynanske regnskab for 2019 var omsætningen sidste år 400.000 kr. mod 310.000 kr. året før. Underskuddet sidste år var 1,2 mio. kr.

Apple is expanding the availability of its music streaming service across Africa
Apple Music, previously available in only 13 African countries, including Nigeria, Ghana, Kenya and South Africa, will now be accessible in 17 additional African countries.
As Apple increasingly pursues digital revenues globally, an expansion across Africa is a nod to changing digital media consumption habits on the continent. Despite the limitations of internet access and costs, there’s growing evidence that more users across the continent are embracing digital services.
As far back as 2015, Nigerians were already consuming more video content on mobile devices than television. And when adjusted for GDP per capita, four African countries are among the top 20 countries for average revenue per user for consumer e-commerce spending last year.
By being more widely available in Africa, Apple is stealing a march on global rival, Spotify which is available in only five African countries (Algeria, Egypt, Morocco, South Africa, Tunisia). Yet, Apple Music also faces a formidable rival in Boomplay, a Chinese-owned streaming service available across most of the continent. Partly owned by Transsion Holdings, the China-based top phone maker in Africa, Boomplay comes pre-installed on Transsion phone brands and is thus more widely available by default.

Markedet for musiktjenester i SSA består af en lang række forskellige aktører og en lang række af forskellige lovlige og ulovlige tjenester, herunder både afrikanske og internationale. De ulovlige tjenester har samlet den største markedsandel.
8.5.1 KONKURRENTER OG EKSISTERENDE
MUSIKTJENESTER I SSA
Der eksisterer en række konkurrenter på markedet for musikstreaming og downloadtjenester i SSA. Ud over forskellige tilgange til musikkataloget, målgruppen og geografisk fokus, har konkurrenterne også forskellige tilgange til legalitet og direkte profitabilitet.
Det er Ledelses vurdering, at Mdundos p.t. største konkurrenter er illegale tjenester samt det kinesisk ejede Boomplay. I henhold til Boomplay er deres tjeneste tilgængelig i 10 lande, har over 2 mio. musiknumre og har over 62 mio. brugere. Den franske musiktjeneste Deezer er tilgængelig i hele verden og dermed også i alle landene i SSA, men de har ikke aktiviteter uden for Sydafrika.
Derudover annoncerede Apple primo 2020, at deres musiktjenester pr. den 1. juli 2020 vil være tilgængelig i yderligere 52 lande globalt inklusiv 17 nye lande i Afrika og dermed i alt i 35 lande i SSA.
Ifølge Weetracker er konkurrencebilledet på det amerikanske music streaming marked meget broget med mange aktører:
While Spotify, one of the biggest players in the music streaming game, took 13 years to gain 96 million paying users by 2018, Africa may take longer to grow its music streaming industry as not much is known about the number of paying users at the moment. Music streaming startups in Africa typically disclose only their total number of users.
Across Africa, the biggest challenge for music streaming startups seems to be piracy. While these platforms provide consumers access to a rich catalogue of good music, they also inadvertently become the prime targets of piracy and currently, Africa lacks a concrete framework to combat the menace.
That notwithstanding, with an estimated population of 420 million youths, as well as music streaming penetration that is expected to grow to up to 14.9% by 2024, Africa might yet become a promising market for music streaming startups.
