Danish card and MobilePay spending in August, up to and including 24 August, is around normal compared with 2019, after being elevated over the summer holiday as more Danes vacationed at home.
The number of COVID-19 cases has come down over the past week, as has spending at pharmacies, which is around 10% above the level in August 2019 and significantly lower than two weeks ago.
We are also seeing signs that use of public transport is coming down as restrictions, including mandatory facemasks, are introduced.
We have seen a clear deterioration in the travel industry, with spending at travel agencies and airlines falling to only 20-25% of normal levels, which is only slightly above the depressed levels from March and April. Higher uncertainty about travel restrictions seems to be making Danes more hesitant about planning holidays.
Despite extended opening hours for bars over the weekend, we have seen no significant uptick in spending. However, we still expect to see some improvement over coming weeks.
Overall, with the holiday season coming to the end, we are seeing a normalisation of spending at both the overall level and for a number of subcomponents such as DIY spending and spending in grocery stores.
