Thought of the week
President Biden’s Inflation Reduction Act will do little to combat inflation in the short term.
However, it is the largest federal investment in clean energy to date, and puts the United States on a path to reduce emissions by approximately 40% by 2030, compared to 30% without it.
The Act provides structural support for renewables and clean energy, but fails to place significant obstacles in the way of continued oil and gas development. Even so, for every ton of emissions generated by oil and gas provisions, at least 24 tons of emissions should be avoided by other provisions.
As such, there should be a modest tailwind for green investment in the US, particularly in proven technologies such as wind, solar and electric vehicles.
