En ny analyse udgivet i det anerkendte tidsskrift Science konkluderer, at oliegiganten ExxonMobil siden 1970’erne har kendt til de alvorlige konsekvenser, som fossile brændsler kan have på klimaet.
Analysen, der bygger på interne dokumenter fra Exxon, viser også, at selvom Exxon har været yderst velinformeret omkring sammenhængen mellem afbrænding af fossile brændsler og global opvarmning, har virksomheden i årtier modarbejdet klimahandling og forsøgt at skabe tvivl om klimavidenskaben.

”We find that most of their (Exxon and ExxonMobil Corp scientists, red.) projections accurately forecast warming that is consistent with subsequent observations. Their projections were also consistent with, and at least as skillful as, those of independent academic and government models. (…) however, the company’s public statements about climate science contradicted its own scientific data.”
“At no point did company scientists suggest that human-caused global warming would not occur. Nor did they conclude that the uncertainties were too great to permit differentiation of human and natural drivers. Yet publicly, ExxonMobil Corp made these claims until at least the early 2010s.”
