Sweden: Manufacturing optimism
The Economic Sentiment Indicator rose 3.6 points to 97.1 in January, while households remained gloomy.
- Overall economy (ESI) increased to 97.1 (previous 93.3).
- The consumer confidence edged down to 92.6 (previous 94.1).
- Confidence in the total business sector increased to 97.4 (previous 94.0), mainly driven by manufacturing firms’ optimism about future production. Inflow of new orders remained subdued.
- Employment plans remained steady at 2 (previous 3), indicating that the slower employment trend will continue.
- Labour shortages continued down and is now almost at long-term average.
- Retailers’ price plans fell back.
- Households’ inflation expectations edged down up 3.4% (previous 3.2%), and moved sideways at 2.7% according to the old method.
- All in all, the survey showed some signs of improvement. Households remained gloomy while manufacturers showed optimism about future production. Labour shortages edged down, suggesting falling resource utilisation.
