The headline Markit France Manufacturing Purchasing Managers’ Index® (PMI® ) – a seasonally adjusted index designed to measure the performance of the manufacturing economy – posted 50.6, up from 48.3 in August.
The latest reading pointed to a marginal improvement in overall operating conditions following deterioration in the previous two survey periods. Output at French manufacturers increased for the first time in three months during September. The rate of expansion was the sharpest since March 2014, albeit modest overall.
The rate of decline in new orders in the French manufacturing sector eased to a negligible pace in September. New export orders remained unchanged on the month. Similarly, staffing levels at French manufacturers decreased only fractionally in the latest survey period. September data pointed to a slight increase in backlogs of work, following a marginal decline one month previously.
Stocks of finished goods were depleted further, extending the current period of contraction to eight months. However, the latest fall was marginal and the weakest in the current sequence. Purchasing activity increased for the first time in three months during September. That said, the rate of growth was marginal.
