Downturn in Russian manufacturing sector reported
Production contracts at sharpest pace since May 2009 New orders slip back into contractionary territory
Summary: Russian manufacturing companies reported a deterioration in operating conditions during December. The decline was driven by a modest contraction in output, the first recorded in four months, while incoming new orders and employment also dropped. Moreover, buying activity reduced, which led to a decrease in inventory levels.
Meanwhile, price pressures persisted in the sector, as both input and output charges rose. The seasonally adjusted Markit Russia Purchasing Managers’ Index™ (PMI® ) – a single-figure snapshot of the performance of the manufacturing economy – posted 48.7 in December. Down from 50.1 in November, the latest figure indicated a downturn in the Russian manufacturing sector, which slipped back into contractionary territory for the first time in three months
